G.R.I.N.D.

Where do I begin. My wife, Kathy, suggested I consider this "Shawn ver. 2.0" and I think she's probably got the right attitude toward it. Since I'm the one in recovery, I'll defer to her more clarified view of the situation. I'll take what works and run with it, the rest, we will work around. February 2015 Back in 2015, while helping install security cameras, I stepped harmlessly from one secured ladder, to one that was not and within seconds, I dropped 10 feet and landed on a vertical sheet of plywood and my right hip landed very hard on a small pile of broken concrete. I felt a pop and of course, the entirety of the impact took my breath away. I knew immediately I had made the dumbest mistake in my life. One that my doctor had warned me about but he was always wrong because that only happened to dumb people who were doing dumb things and I'd seen the Youtube videos to prove it... and you and I both know, now, I was completely wrong. I could not breathe ...

Cube-Shaped Heart

I wrote about the soul in other posts but I was inspired by a mental picture of something that I felt needed to be put to print. The soul is this invisible and almost imaginary "thing" that as I mentioned previously, isn't really as talked about as Jesus or God or other typical conversations we find in church environments. That's not to knock on churches but we all should share when we can. Anyone can inspire. I'll jump right in. Imagine a cube, a box of sorts that is invisible but somehow perturbs your vision of what is on the other side of it. Maybe it reflects light and maybe it refracts it but it shimmers with both as if anxious for something... and that too is a part of this story. You can't touch it or sense it in any other way than just with your vision. Now, this cube represents our soul and that is where this perspective starts on what is a soul. A child is born and when it arrives, it has a soul. We all have one but nobody spends much time discussin...

What's This Life For?

Back in the late 1990's, a band by the name of "Creed" came out with a song that posed the question, "What's This Life For?" and according to the band, it was a personal question raised after two of the band members experienced the suicide of friends. While the song itself doesn't go much further than the stated question, it is clear that the existential nature of the song struck a nerve with many as it reached the number one position on the Billboard "mainstream rock" chart. So... it's a good question... what is this life for? I've seen and heard many insightful and perceptive opinions on it and have listened to and read the accounts of many who have a broader and far more in-depth understanding of theology. While I will be the first to say I don't have a clue as to the true nature of our being, I do believe this: there is a purpose for each of us. First, I don't know much I can share as to the nature of God, Jesus, Yahweh, or ...

...A Higher Power

Back in 1994 the music world was reeling from the death of Kurt Cobain who as the former lead singer of the band, Nirvana was rocketing to fame. The 80's were the decade of New Wave, Modern Country, Hair Metal and Punk. The 90's were having no part of that and thus the combined influences somehow spun off the Grunge movement. Cobain was considered one of the more notable singer/songwriters of Grunge and his death left a hole in the genre for many. At nearly the same time, the sports world was stunned that its once-loved football star, O.J. Simpson had "allegedly" killed his wife and an acquaintance and was about to stand trial for it...  and a young saxophonist from Arkansas who spent his days as a politician there had become the 42nd president of the United States. Despite all of that, the past always seems so much more innocent. Funny how the emotions and shock are filtered by time.  Were those times more simple... or were we simply enjoying the ignoranc...
